Silver Rush AKA Christmas in July

Last Thursday was quite a day for thrift store-shopping!

Not only did I find several nice white china and iron stone pieces, I found a number of silver plate pieces as well.

Four knives - three of which match and one odd one.

A shallow bowl - it was holding a pretty glass hurricane, which I'm pretty sure was not an intentional set, but it somehow broke in transit. Oh, well.

This lidded box had floral foam in it, with the lid wedged open. When I removed the foam, the lid was sprung. Bummer.

Since it will not close, I suppose I can use it like the prior owner used it; with the lid open, and some sort of floral poking out the top.

Behind it, a thin silver plate tray I almost passed up. It is made in China, and the weight and quality are sub-standard. Since it was a buck, I opted to buy it, thinking I might even paint it at some point. It would be pretty spray-painted...

This nice little silver plate cup could have been a baby gift...I will probably put a tea light candle in it.

I have been scooping up silver plate when I see it, though I have not used it since winter. I will definitely use it again at Christmas, which brings me to a couple more purchases:

Reproduction mercury glass - not old, but still pretty. Poor man's silver. I also use it at Christmas. Most all my mercury glass is from the thrift store! Some of it is from Krylon Looking Glass. I have bought very little at retail.

I also found a pair of these...which remind me of childhood Christmas parties. I had one that was red and white from a school party. I found two white ones last week. They will probably be listed on Etsy.

Word for the Day:
Proverbs 2:1-5

My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
    and inclining your heart to understanding;
yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.

Great metals! I love picking up metals on the cheap - so durable, and great as containers for utensils, etc. I have a lightweight tray like yours, and I taped the edges, and used black chalkboard paint in the center. We use it as a sign in our antique booth space. :)

I love your silver finds. I also like to use silver around the house. My favorite are the tarnished footed platters. Love your iron stone too. It is a great find when you can get English ironstone. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog. Alaina

Hi Revi ... you really have some nice finds. I think the use of silverplate is getting pretty popular again and so inexpensive to buy at garage sales.Google is not working for me so hope I can post this comment.

Lucky you! I rarely pass up silver plate, especially when it has such a beautiful patina.

You are on some kind of treasure gold mine up there!
I have never seen a solid white Santa mug- I had no idea I could get one without the red. Now I must have some. ;)
