DO NOT DO WHAT I DID! (a blogging lesson)

You may already know this, but I didn't.

A while back, I did a series of informational posts on two subject matters near and dear to my heart: Gestalt and Color Theory.

I got great feedback, and it made me feel great to share information learned in design classes - information I've never seen anywhere else.

I found visual examples for the various principles using Pinterest. I was excited to find the wealth of visual examples availble there!

Don't get me wrong - this is NOT a Pinterest-bashing post.   I STILL LOVE PINTEREST. This is a post about how NOT to use Pinterest, to avoid yourself time and headaches in the future.

Usually, the photos I use in this blog are my own, taken by me, of my own projects and my own home.

Recently, I looked at one of my Gestalt posts, only to find every single photo link gone. They all had that little "broken" image icon thingy. I was shocked!

Face it - a post without photos to illustrate design concepts is not worth looking at; it is useless.

Now, I have two options:

Option 1 - stage and take new photos of my own that illustrate the concepts, which would be very time consuming.

Option 2 - download photos to my computer and link them from there, so they won't disappear in the future. Of course, I'd still give credit to the source, but would not rely on the source to keep the photos indefinitely.

I will never again post a photo using a URL from another web site as my source. The photos may disappear without a trace.

Since I loved those posts, I'm going to redo them. The information is of value, and the posts deserve to be done again.

My advice to all bloggers who link to commercial sites or Pinterest photos in your posts: BEWARE.

If you have any advice you would like to share, please do so in a comment.

Word for the Day:
Ecclesiastes 12:12
My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

More Vignettes - Modern Elements Mixed with Vintage & Industrial

This is my final Living Room post for transitioning into summer. I've pared down, and added bits of modern with my vintage thrift store finds.

All the items on the vintage trunk above are thrift store finds, except for the reindeer moss!

The trunk serves as a coffee table as well as holding a TON of off-season decor items.

For spring/summer, I've focused on whites, pale grays, beiges and tucked the bronze, rusty metal and darker grays into the chest and primitive cabinet.

The shelving that flanks the fireplace is another place I've
tried to work the modern in with the vintage. I already had some of it going on with small modern art pieces hanging on the wall.

On the shelf above, I just removed some items and added a modern vase.

I placed a pretty glass vase in the front window next to a vintage brass lamp that was painted to look like an antique finial.

A small side table holds yet another mod, simple vase, a faux vintage frame with "antique" mirror made with Krylon Looking Glass paint. Another vintage brass lamp painted in silver sits on a stack of vintage books.

Though I am enjoying incorporating some clean, modern shapes into my living room, my true love is the vintage, rusty, chippy items with patina. If I had to choose one over the other, old stuff wins over new.

But thankfully, there are times when new is best.

Word for the Day:
Lamentations 3:22-23
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning;
