Vintage Shabby & Modern: Can They Peacefully Co-Exist?

In a word...yes. I personally find juxtaposing two styles that are not expected to be together the MOST exciting kind of design.

I like all kinds of design. If I can use items in unexpected ways, I am not as limited as I might be otherwise. This is a good thing for a thrift store shopper!

For example, I love old, traditional picture frames paired with modern, abstract art.

I love vintage lamps with modern shades.

I love modern lamps sitting smack-dab in the middle of a room full of vintage things with plenty of patina.

I love sleek, simple pottery positioned amid rusty, crusty, aged vintage items.

Did I mention how much I like rusty things?

Mixing design styles may be a little tricky to do successfully, but doing it successfully makes for a truly unique, eclectic and personalized environment.

For the summer, I have decided to integrate more clean, modern elements into my current living room and dining room. This means I will also remove some of the elements, but just which ones, I have not yet decided.

I plan to post about the summer changes, of course. In my posts, I'll include some guidelines and considerations based on Gestalt principles.

Until then!

Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard.

I'm definitely in agreement about the combining of modern and vintage, it keeps the old stuff from just feeling old. The spark and "clean" of it, really makes the vintage things come alive. Opposites attract!

Revi, I personally really like the look. If anyone can pull it off it's you girl. I love vintage, but for me everything old is almost a musty smell. Everything new is just, well; too new. lol! Love, love the mix. I'm drooling over that wooden box! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
