Saturday Thrift Store & Garage Sale Finds...

I seriously had not planned to go to any garage sales or thrift stores today. Ethan made me do it.

My eldest son phoned last night and said he'd found a Craig's List ad for a garage sale near me, and it had glass-blowing tools and supplies for a good price. He wondered if I might be planning to get out...and of course, being a "good mom" I headed out there first thing this morning.

I ended up buying a box of stuff for him, which I think was probably worth quite a bit more than I paid for it. It will be an early birthday present.

While I was there, I looked around. There were some pretty cool things, and the prices were good. The little chest above was $2. I think It will not be painted...it's perfect like it is. It may go to my friend, Cathy, next weekend, if she likes it!

I also found a smallish painting in a nice gilded wood frame. It's a little "granny chic" but definitely not a paint-over canvas. I like it.

The frame has a couple of areas with issues, but I have antique gold Rub 'N' Buff...

And the best part? It cost a buck. Garage sales are the bomb!

I also found a lovely silver dish with a lid. It was monogrammed, and not tarnished.

I could see a hallmark, but had to get it home to read it.

Google told me it means Electro Plated Nickle Silver. It may be English Sheffield, but the bearded man is a mystery. Any clues?

Each piece was marked $2, but I thought that was reasonable for a heavy piece with a lovely design.

I figure finding these nice things was maybe my reward for being a good mom today. It's nice to have an opportunity to be a good mom to adult kids. :)

Thrifty Life Thursday #32 With Features From Last Week!

This adorable chair is a recent purchase for less than $6...at a thrift store I visit occasionally. Most of my favorite thrifts do not have furniture.

I also found a couple of ironstone pieces there - seriously taped together so you can barely see what they are in this photo! Oh, well, it can be a surprise for later.

This place is more expensive for small items, but sometimes I can find furniture for a reasonable price.

I put the chair on my tiny stoop/porch, and I'm seriously debating with myself whether or not to paint it.

My house is neutral - the paint color is "cafe au lait" and the windows and front door are painted a medium-dark gray.

However, I do have a rusty green wagon out there...and I plan to fill it with mums and pumpkins again.

I was considering moving the wagon to another part of the yard, so I'm leaning toward painting...some shade of white or gray.

Maybe I can take some photos this weekend and get your opinion...

MEANWHILE...Take a look at the features from last week!

Sherry from Thrift My House shared a tasty banana treat, and no, it's not a food post.

She found this mismatched furniture at a thrift store, her husband did surgery on the chair, and her daughter painted much of it. It is for her daughter's new solo occupancy bedroom. (Start 'em young, I say!) Go over and see the before photos. This family has skills!

Tania from Farragoz Designer's Notebook shared a really clever revision of a table. NO, it is not the dark gray piece on which the chair is sitting. Any guesses? You'll just have to visit to find out about the other table. BTW, a chair in a vignette! How cool is that?! You can consider this two creative ideas in one post - a lovely two-fer.

Cecilia from My Thrift Store Addiction is taking turns with Audrey to see who can be creative enough to be featured every week.

Seriously, but when you see these chairs...how could I NOT feature them? (Ummm, forget you've seen them featured in the A-list blogs already, just enjoy your opportunity to see such lovely chairs in such a beautiful color one more time. Then, if you haven't yet, go to her blog and pin them.)

      It's the Little Things...

Aaahhh, summertime. (Insert sounds of birds chirping and lawn mowers running here.)

Usually, I spend my Saturday mornings cleaning house, but I had to run a few errands, so I headed out and decided to have a little shopping therapy.

Wait...what's that???!!! (Insert sounds of screeching tires here.)

OOOOOHHH, a garage sale at the end of my block...just for me. :) Thank you. I think that was a sweet little indicator of a good day ahead.

I found the little cubby thing above - it's not huge, about 18" square, but I think it might serve a purpose somewhere around here. It's getting painted, of course.

I also bought a milk glass plate I'll list on Etsy, and a bunch of "crafting" things; magnets, wooden letters, mats, felt to back vintage things...they were cheap.

You already saw my big purchases if you read about my amazing crates and $5 table, so this post is dedicated to small things I plan to use in my semi-dramatic living room redo in September.

This is the piece that got my brain cogitating on an industrial living room...with Mustard accents. I bought it a while back from Donna's Etsy shop. I love it. FYI - she has more...

Then, I found the piece above...at Ross. It had been marked down and I think it was $8.99. It needed a little touch up with black acrylic paint, which I was happy to do.

Once I decided to go all out industrial vintage glam for the fall, it was almost like things started appearing out of the blue...gifts from heaven!

Last Friday, I found 4 like-new pillows for $1 each. 3 of them will be used in my living room -
      shades of mustard & camel.

A Waverly gold velvet damask. A gold tiny bolster with trim that may or may not get covered up...and a ROUND pillow. I love it!

If I get bored (like that ever happens!) I can shoot hoops.

This one may be a jumping off place for decorating the middle bedroom for fall & Christmas!

Wool latch-hook pillows like this are not cheap! Similar ones sell for about $50. Isn't it adorable? Especially for a buck. And this kitty won't shed or poo...

I'm getting excited about using mustard, like I did about using radiant orchid

I still have some projects to work on before I can begin assembling my room, though.

Hey...I just looked at the date today and realized something...this is my 3 year blogiversary.
It's Lynn's too...we were conceived on the same day. Happy blogiversary, Lynn!

      Word for the Day:
      Luke 13:18-19
18 He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?19 It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.”

Don't Hate Me Because They're Beautiful...

I had a really, really good day on Saturday.
First, I went to the post office to mail and Etsy sale. Then, I went to a little store where they make homemade tortillas - corn and flour.

I had decided that since I had to get out early, I'd hit some garage sales and maybe visit a few places that are not open after 5 on weekdays.

A new double bed is on my list...preferably a nice antique style one...with a pretty headboard that I can paint white.

It was triple digits hot here, so I stopped in at a drive through convenience store for a 44 oz. iced tea. When I got to the window, there was a nice, smiling young man who presented my giant tea and said,"This one's on me."

I was surprised and touched - seriously, that random act of kindness made me shed a few sweet tears as I drove away. (I was going to get cash, but since I didn't purchase anything...)

First I went into a place that keeps regular business hours - named "Hoarders" of all things.
Well, they can keep their junk along with the name. It was WAAAAY overpriced for a junk store. I walked out empty handed.

Then, a block down was another place with junk in the windows and more junk outside. I decided to investigate.

So, I walk inside, and there's junk everywhere.
The lady who owned the junk looked like a version of Ma Kettle.

Some of it was good junk, just not my style, and it wasn't cheap, either. (Think $10 for a piece of milk glass.) Then, I spied two crates full of books.

One crate had a price tag on it - $5.

They were both very well made - reinforced corners, and lovely weathered wood.

And did you see the authentic industrial stamped lettering on the sides?

Google told me Wagner is a trophy and engraving business. These may not be older than 1984, but they have the look I like!

I asked the lady if she would mind emptying them out, that I would buy them from her. She didn't take debit cards, so I told her I'd go to the convenience store a couple of blocks away to get cash while she emptied them.

When I got back, a couple I had seen at Hoarders was there, and they wanted my crates, too. I was glad the lady told them they were taken!

Then, I spotted the table they're sitting on at a garage sale - it was also $5.

I found more small goodies I will share in another post!

Industrial living room...I can hardly wait!

      Word for the Day:
      2 Timothy 2:20
Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable.
