Chalk Box by the Door

When you paint a door in your kitchen AND the place where a window used to be above your sink with chalk board paint, you need a box of chalk.

You also need a handy place to keep it.

I've seen some pretty clever ideas for chalk-holders on other blogs. Still pondering which I might do, I spotted this outdated little recipe card box at the thrift store.

I can't remember if it was .57c or .87c, but it was cheap.
Chalk paint sticks to everything, right?

So I grabbed my can of Annie Sloan French Linen Chalk Paint, and painted it. Then, I stenciled in pencil. How easy!

I distressed it, and waxed it with Johnson's Paste Wax, which I really liked!

I've bought Minwax, which was HARD as a rock.

I've bought Annie Sloan clear soft wax, which is good, but a bit pricey.

Thursday, I found a can of Johnson's Paste Wax for under $4! (The place where I bought them actually had two more cans, which I'll probably go back to get next week.)

It's nice and soft, with a very slight caramel tint. I plan to experiment adding gel stain to one of the cans, to make my own dark wax on the cheap!

Don't worry, I'll let you know if it works.

Now, my cheap, chalk-painted chalk box holds a box of chalk right next to the chalk board door. How's that for a tongue twister?

I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

great idea and great find. Such a functional project. The wax you got seems like the perfect wax to use in these kind of projects, and the idea of adding some dark gel stain sounds really good
