IS THIS ART?

I am showing you this because
I know some of you will understand.

You "get" why I paid for this item.
You see it through the same filter as I.

If you're reading this and
you don't get it: Yes, I paid for it.

I paid .10c at a garage sale
a few weeks back.
(OK - it wasn't much. I WOULD have paid more...)

I was thrilled to hand the nice man my dime,
and then bring it home with me.
(Actually, I left if in Julie's car,
or you may have seen it sooner.)

What exactly do I love about this
rusty, beat-up, old hammer head?

I love the heft and texture of it.
I love it that this thing has seen quite a few years,
and some very hard work. You can tell.

I think about what it may have looked like
when it was new, where it was made...

...what it cost, who bought it and for what purpose.

I wonder about what it might have built.
And I wonder when it lost its handle.

And I wonder how long it has been
languishing disconnected, unable
to continue the purpose for which it was created.

And I am thankful to have found it
for .10c at a garage sale down the street.

I am thankful I can appreciate this
rusty thing, and display it in my home.

I am thankful I can see it with eyes
that appreciate it as if it had been
CREATED to be a piece of sculpture...

 A contemporary abstract
bronze sculpture by Lynda Hukins

...instead of having been MOLDED into a sculpture
by enduring so many hard things for so long.

I can only see it from that perspective
because I am seen from that perspective.
And for that, I am thankful beyond words.

Word for the Day:
Deuteronomy 4:20
But the LORD has taken you and
brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt,
to be a people of his own inheritance,
as you are this day.

well! when you put it that way...YES!
It's art...most definitely.

...can't beat that for a dime!
Hmmm...next time I'm asked what can a DIME BUY in today's market? I can reference your post; and settle that question for good.
ART!
I think your art is a wonderful NOD to the industrial time period that this great country once had in the past. A nice post for LABOR DAY! Bet your art isn't made in China!
...if I was a bettin' person, Pat

It's definitely a piece of art. I would have bought it too. I have all sorts of items, that, I'm not sure what their original purpose was, but they are beautiful just the same.
