To Paint or Not to Paint?

Generally, the answer to that question is a no-brainer for me. I LOVE paint - the act of painting, the look of a newly painted something, even the smell of it.

But this was not an easy decision. The items in question were old family pieces. And I always liked their beat-up original finishes well enough.

But this time, the tarnished gold frames just didn't fit.
So I thought about it for longer than the usual five seconds.

And I decided, "Why not?" I wasn't going to change the beat-up character of the frames, just do them in lighter neutral whites.

I was never that crazy about this frame anyway.

So I mixed up some homemade plaster paint and did it.
A little sanding, and my own mix of dark wax, and I loved them!

The whites didn't compete with the subject matter, but complemented.

And they work much better in my home now.

I'll show them in place when things are farther along!

I think it was a great choice. I always question myself with: am I using it in it's original state? if the answer is no, than it's ok for me to paint it.
