Saturday mornings are usually my
moderately-heavy cleaning time.
It's a must-do situation, since I work outside the home.
Of course I'd rather be at a Garage Sale,
but I like a relatively clean and tidy home.
You wouldn't know it now, since I began
redoing every room in the house last year.
Have you ever done that? I'm not sure I'd
recommend it, and I knew it would be a mess
before I got into it, but I couldn't stand
the way things were a minute longer.
And to do something really different, it meant
using things I already had - just differently. And it meant lots of paint.
Which is good. I love everything about paint - even the smell of
a newly painted room is pleasing to my sensibilities.
But I'm getting off on a tangent here, and that is another post!
Anyway, I'm cleaning, and decide I need to take a break
and take advantage of the sunshine before the temp gets
up into the 100's we've been told we'll experience today.
I made a really good haul at Goodwill yesterday, which
I'll share later this week. But one piece in particular got me thinking,
and I wanted to share those thoughts with you.
This little $2 bird cage caught my attention.
It even came with a little bird on a nest inside.
I've considered putting birds on nests inside cages
myself, but it just seems a little redundant. Do you agree?
So mostly, I leave them empty.
But I don't usually pass up a $2 bird cage when I find it.
I put the little cage on my chippy stool in front of the mantel.
As I began taking photos, I got all warm and fuzzy
As I began taking photos, I got all warm and fuzzy
over the rust. I mean, just look at it! The wood is
in good shape, so it was probably somewhere it was
protected, like on a covered patio or porch, but it's rusty.
And I like it.
So WHY do I like rusty, chippy things so much?
And why do I enjoy going to garage sales and
thrift stores and why do I like the old rusty stuff
better than the still-current, new sleek and shiny stuff?
(Click the bold type for a link to
"Why We Love Vintage Shabby")
It's not just about the money,
or because it's green or anything like that, though
I must admit those reasons only confirm the decision
to use rusty things from Goodwill in my house!
But If I won the lottery and had 53 million dollars in a
lot of bank accounts, I'd still want this kind of stuff.
And, no I'm not a cheapskate, or crazy - or anything like that.
So WHY? Well, I was thinking as I wiped a few (not all :))
cobwebs off my new purchase. And I thought, "I COULD paint it white..."
Or I could leave it this nice gray/brown chippy rusty style. That would work.
It may be just what the mantel needs.
It may be just what the mantel needs.
So as I freed this little nest bird from her cage, I thought:
"She's just charming. I like her a little dusty and weathered."
And then it hit me!
My favorite people are like this little bird
and her redundant cage.
Some of them are a little rough around the edges.
They are humble and honest. They are simple and plain.
Some are a little old and chippy and rusty, and very charming.
Some have pasts, but God has changed that, and you wouldn't
know it if they didn't tell you, which they do, because they're honest.
And you will not meet a finer human being anywhere.
On second thought, maybe you
know someone like that? Tell them how much
you admire them for all the right reasons today.
Now, off to sweep and mop the kitchen!
Word for the Day:
Isaiah 66:2
Has not my hand made all these things,
Has not my hand made all these things,
and so they came into being?” declares the LORD.
“This is the one I esteem: he who is humble
and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.

Yes, we all are a little dusty, rusty and chippy. What a great find and I love your sentiments. Spot on.
Great Scripture, love the bird cage~ Happy weekend!

nice post thanks for sharing looking for to visit more...blessings
I'm so glad you left the bird cage "as is" with the wonderful patina...you are right...the rust makes it more interesting. And I'm glad that the little bird is out of the cage too. Thanks for sharing this thought=provoking blog post.
Love your post and that little cage and bird are sweet1
