More Little Changes in the Living Room

Hi again. Saturday found me tweaking,
painting and rearranging my living room.

There were no BIG changes,
but hours of little ones...

...like adding some greenery to my fall mantel.

I might as well go ahead and warn you...
it will change. Though I like it in general,
it's lacking some drama. And I still need
to see some more green stuff!

Styling the mantel for fall led me to
revise the shelves on either side - partly due
to using some of the items on them!

Before:

After:

It's a bit simplified - a good thing.

I tend to fill up empty space like a vacuum!
A little empty space is good.

I came very close to painting these baskets gray...
what would you do? Natural or washed gray?

And here's the other side before:
(What was I thinking!!!?)

and after:

Here's a different view of the decanters:

Here's a small table scape before:

and after:

Here's the fireplace hearth before:

and after:

Did you notice...I moved the big trunk
to where the antique silvered crate has been.
It's now a coffee table.

I painted the wood tray on top of it with ASCP
French Linen. My son said, "You paint everything.
Wood grain can't survive around you." But honestly,
It DOES look better on top of the trunk.
See, it's still wet in spots! I had to hurry to get photos.

And the silver crate thing is where
the trunk used to live:

And I've added some found objects to my
almost finished painting...please tell me if
you think they work, or if they're distracting.

For now, they're attached with duct tape donuts.
I like the clock face, but it seems a bit small
and like it needs something else. The rusty round
thing may be a can lid or something.

Though I like the size and placement of it,
having two round pieces seems a bit...I don't know...
just not quite right. I could put something square
there...galvanized metal or something like that.

But maybe something in a lighter value, so
it didn't fight for attention with the clock face.

I have more changes to show you,
but they'll wait till next time!

Thanks for your comments and opinions -
when I ask, I really DO want them, and I listen to you.

You're like a good friend I can go
swimsuit shopping with!

(What do you think? Does this room
make my bottom look big?)

Word for the Day:
Jeremiah 13:23
Can the Ethiopian change his skin
or the leopard his spots?
Then also you can do good
who are accustomed to do evil.

  1. I like all the changes! I like the basket natural, because you do have some other natural stuff in the room, but I have to say, if you are going for a muted-toned down look, then gray washed would definitely work!

  2. Ha! I'm not sure about the stuff on the painting. I like the clock face though. I'm always torn about painting the baskets too. I have a couple and I've haven't had the nerve yet. You go first! :) I don't necessarily want mine the natural color, but I'm not sure how good a job I'd do painting them either. Hate to take a chance or is it I hate to make a decision. Both. They are intertwined. Nice changes in your living room. Your shelves look lovely!

  3. I love the changes the shelves look great. I particularly like the right one. I love the way you turned that side table against the wall. That vignette is awesome. The painting is quite interesting. I like everything except that piece across the top. I think I would like it without anything best though.

  4. Stopping by for a visit! Your "little changes" make a big difference. I always love how OPEN your house looks - makes mine feel cramped!

  5. I think I agree with what Karen said about the painting being able to stand on its own without the additions. When I first glanced at it, the clock face looked like a combination from a safe or locker. If you keep those 2 circles, I would add a square or triangle of similar size in that area. Love your groupings and vignettes a LOT. Also like the turn of the table!! Thanks for sharing.

  6. I had that exact same trunk as a coffee table for years. I then sold it to get out of debt--you make me want it back! :) Thank you so much for sharing this at Rustic Restorations Weekend!
