More Vintage Ironstone and Silver Plate Finds...

If you go to garage sales in the summer, sometimes it gets really hot. People tend to close them after noon, at least around here.

Hannah and I went to several last Saturday in Oklahoma City. It wasn't unbearably hot, but it was pretty warm and humid. We found a few odds and ends at the first few, and then ran some other errands.

We'd had a light lunch and no breakfast, so we were going to eat an early dinner.

On the way, we passed several garage sale signs, and the sales were still going strong at 4 p.m. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to at least drive by for a look. If they had things on our list, or if they looked interesting, we would stop. Dinner could wait.

At the first sale, we found a great chair for Hannah's living room. It had great style, a cushion that needed nothing, and it looked new. On closer inspection, we found a hang tag from Kirkland's with a price near $400. It was a steal at $20.

The next place had "leftovers" from an estate sale. There were estate sale prices on everything, but the nice man running the sale said to ask if we were interested, because the prices were really much cheaper than marked.

The first thing I asked about was a nice, heavy china platter. It was marked $3 and when I asked the price, it was .50c

My heart beat a bit faster when I saw the deep discount, so I asked about some silver plate; first, a tarnished oval platter for Hannah.

I think it was .50c, but it may have been a dollar.
It's the one on top in the photo above.

Feeling bolder, I asked about a couple more pieces...pretty pierced trays.

I love the art nouveau-ish sort of design in this one. There are no markings.

This tray is also pretty. It is marked "MERIDIEN S.P. CO. INTERNATIONAL S. CO. 757"

I think it was $1.50, but it was a little confusing.

The last piece I spotted was an ironstone "topless tureen" Donna would like.

It has a chipped handle, but that didn't stop me from buying it. It might have at one time, but I am learning to embrace imperfection - especially imperfection that comes from age and experience.

It has a mark on the bottom. I think it might be pre-1870.

I found an interesting web site with ironstone and prices HERE

"Jacob Furnival, the maker of Furnival Ironstone is shown in the 1871 census records as Jacob Furnival, age 69, "Retired Manufacturer".  This makes this piece no later than 1870..."

The couple who had the estate sale were friends of the man who had the garage sale, and he said they were in their 90's. It could have belonged to their parents.

At the end, he bundled my ironstone and silver plate and said I could take it for $5 for all. It worked out to $1 per item.

On my way out, I bought really old books - 3 for $1.

Bottom line, I don't really care if my ironstone tureen is chipped. I think it is beautiful, and I admire it for being around so long.

I suppose there are TWO morals to this story; sometimes the LATE bird gets the worm...at least at garage sales. And even very old, imperfect things can be beautiful and loved. (People, too.)

Old Books - Thrifty Life Thursday and Features from Last Week!

Last weekend, Hannah and I went to a few pretty nice garage sales in Oklahoma City. The last one we went to had leftovers from an estate sale of people in their 90's.

Old books always attract my attention, and these were 3 for a dollar. Sometimes, when the covers are in bad shape, I remove them and use the books in a deconstructed way.

Most of my deconstructed books are Reader's Digest books, not terribly old. I love finding the really old ones that are bound in sections.

I'm having a hard time with these, though - for one thing - the subject matter is really good. One is an anatomy book with wonderful illustrations! Another is a history of the 1800s year by year. They probably will NOT be ripped up and deconstructed.

I also found ironstone and silver plate for cheap prices there...but that's another post.

This week, we have some lovely, clever, charming features again. I have NEVER struggled to find enough good stuff to feature - quite the opposite. We may not have quantity, but we have quality here...thank you for that.

Susan from Must Love Junk shared a "cubby thing" in a lovely aqua color...she has a black belt in creating vignettes, and this one is no exception.

Patti from Ivy and Elephants charmed us with a fork and spoon, and there was no food involved. I had a hard time choosing which I liked better...maybe this one.

Roxie from Sweet Vintage of Mine shared the most charming potting sink in the world! Stop by to see what clever thing she did for the skirt...

Hannah's House Part 2 - The Dining Room

Hannah's dining room and living room are very open to each other - much like one large space.

The wall color is the same gray with wood trim and both rooms have the lovely hardwood floors.

The drum pendant is leaded glass - black, gray and white. It was happily already in the home.

She stained an unfinished wood harvest table in onyx stain. The table was a Craig's List find two summers ago.

She purchased two wonderful metal candlesticks at a consignment store earlier this year. LOVE the patina.

There are 4 chairs - ones I bought years ago at a thrift store. They were really cheap - 10 bucks each at most.  They're not the best quality, but they served a purpose back then. They sat in my garage for years and through a garage sale without selling. I even tried to give them to my sons...

We were pretty glad they didn't sell so Hannah could use them now at least until she finds some she really likes later.

They were free, basically. A coat of gray paint by me and some cute fabric seats by Hannah, and they'll be good for a while. We found the fabric at JoAnn's.

This chest of drawers was a recent Craig's List find. Hannah was shopping for a wider piece, but this one was reasonable, and a piece like this can be used in a number of ways. Meanwhile, she's still looking for a buffet. This piece is just as she found it - and may get a little makeover at some point.

For now, it is a nice place for a funky vintage lamp in brass, with a black drum shade we found at Ross on my last trip.

A collection of three vintage brass mirrors hangs above a brass tray and pewter goblets - all from thrift stores.

Silver plate coasters are ready for guest drinks.

Keeping the mixed metal theme going, a collection of oval trays with lots of patina hangs on the wall to the right of the chest.

The top one was found at a garage sale this past weekend in OKC. The center one is from my neighbor's garage sale...I considered keeping it!

Hannah found the brass one recently, and it really completed the wall in an interesting way, I think.

There is a hall doorway to the right of the platters. To the right of the doorway is another small wall that needed some art.

I found this really nice black and gold wood frame with a print at a thrift store last week.

It held a vintage art print, which I took as-is, thinking it might be usable.

Hannah opted for new art instead of the print, so we bought some mustard, charcoal and white paint at Hobby Lobby and I painted while we watched Netflix. Just like home...

I painted right on top of the print. It is not quite as bright in real life - more mustard than bright yellow...

I totally forgot to photograph the other side of the room - the wall that the fireplace is on in the living room. There are double windows on the wall. Two short walls dividing a breakfast room Hannah uses as a "bar" area on one side, and the living room on the other side.

You can see the leather art pieces that hung in my house in this photo:

Here they are again, before going to Hannah's house:

There is a small black bench against the windows, too, and another grouping of a gold mirror, small original art piece in a chunky 1970's gold frame and an empty black frame. I didn't get photos of this...but her dining room is about 75 percent finished, I think.

She can invite friends for dinner, and I think she's planning to host her boyfriend's birthday party soon. :)

      Word for the Day:
      Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
