2 Years!
I knew my 2 year blog anniversary was this week, but I forgot about it until I got ready to publish this post! Thank you, sweet friends, who have stayed with me on my journey. You were and are still an unexpected joy in my life.
I promised you I'd take photos of the room I've been working on the past few weekends, so here's my starting place.
As I told you in my last post, this antique iron bed is from England - it was the first piece of furniture I bought as an adult. It was an odd shade of tan, very chippy. I painted it black, and it has been black ever since.
The metal trim on it is brass that has been nickle plated, and it is wearing off in places.
I have used a Waverly dust ruffle and pillow - off white and black. I am considering painting the bed white, but will put off the decision until I decide what to do with some of the other pieces in this room.
On the far side of the bed, I moved my "7" table.
It allows enough access to change sheets and such. I don't plan to put a lamp on the table, but I have a plan for a hanging light on that side of the table.
The small side table fits just barely in the space by the doorway to the art room. (The art room is a TOTAL messy jumble of boxes and things!)
I will probably keep the door open most of the time, so that corner will be empty.
Just beyond the door opening is a vintage English oak chest. It was also an early adulthood purchase. It was once in much better shape - after surviving almost 30 years - 20 of them in a semi-arid environment that has loosened joints and caused the top to split.
It has lovely details.
But some of the decorative trim around the bottom is missing.
I have always loved the pulls on this piece. And though I read about how many people dislike golden oak, I still like it.
However I could use some wood filler, glue and paint, and make this piece whole again.
And I do love the look of a mostly mixed-whites room...
With either a black bed OR a white one.
A white bookcase will go in this corner by the closet.
Martha will probably end up here, too. She's been waiting patiently for that new frock. Of course, she prefers dropcloth to other fabrics, so we're in good shape with that.
And if I do use bits of black in here, which I plan to do even if I paint the bed white, I will use my leather artwork.
They were formerly in my dining room. It will be fitting to use them in this room with English furnishings. They are most likely based on images of King James in 1607.
After all this, I'll let you know I'm leaning toward painting the oak chest and leaving the bed black. But I do value your opinions, so please let me know your thoughts!
Word for the Day:
2 Corinthians 8:10
And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it.

happy year two, revi! i'd paint the bed and leave the oak, --i still love oak finishes:) either way, it will look great:)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on two years of blogging!! Your room is coming together nicely. I really like your English chest with all of its personality.

Congrats on your two year anniversary! I really enjoy reading it and your recent painting tips recently changed my life (I LOVE wrapping the rollers in plastic, it works like a charm and doesn't get drippy). http://revisionarylife.blogspot.com/2013/07/two-painting-tips-you-probably-wont.html
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary!!! Love your gorgeous antiques, such pretty detail and hardware. Fabulous bed too. Thanks tons for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI love a piece of golden oak in a room, and every room needs something black to ground it. BUT with the damage on the cabinet, I might be tempted to paint it. I cannot believe I just typed paint and oak in the same sentence! Looking forward to your decisions.
ReplyDeleteI have full confidence that you could fix the broken chest. I think if you have a room of all neutrals, having a wood piece is a nice change, but painting it would be fun and would give it new life. You can't go wrong!

Congratulations on two years of blogging! It looks like you could repair the chest with wood glue and clamps. I would leave it unpainted myself. Antique oak is beautiful. The bed would be nice painted white, but I like it the way it is too. I'm sure whatever you do will be beautiful! Thank you for sharing at What We Accomplished Wednesdays!
ReplyDeleteHi Revi, this post is similar to one that I will be doing soon. I have been working on the guest bedroom in our basement. Almost ready for sharing. I love your iron bed! It is really unique. The chest is a great piece. I would hesitate to paint it also. I just painted an oak armoire Duck Egg Blue, but it was not an antique. A piece we bought years ago from a friend. She purchased it at Leather, Oak, and Brass. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
Forgot to congratulate you on your two year anniversary. Glad to be one of your followers!
ReplyDeleteLovely bedroom and blog. :))
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day.
First time ever at your blog, but congrats on the 2-year anniversary. I'm with you on still liking the golden oak. I get it when people paint '80s oak, but hate that the color itself gets so much flak. My kitchen cabinets, circa 2004, are a gorgeous golden oak as seen in this old post http://sumpnsassy.blogspot.com/2008/12/today.html
ReplyDeleteSorry--I took a detour there. :^) What I meant to say is that I'd like to see you leave the chest and the bedstead as is and go for adding the white in other ways. A gathered white bedskirt (aka this one http://sumpnsassy.blogspot.com/2012/10/workin-on-guest-room.html ), a cluster of white pillows, paint a white lamp, plus your lovely chair redone in dropcloth and voila you've got a lovely white bedroom, while maintaining the beauty of the other pieces.
