Industrial Side Table...

I have a new industrial side table.
New...it's all a matter of perspective, right?

I spotted the potential in this piece, and nabbed it for $5 at the thrift store.

Here is how it looked:

It was just a frame with potential. I needed to adjust the horizontal control. It had probably come with glass inserts at one time.

I considered glass or wood...

Then I decided cool gray galvanized steel would be the best choice.

So last Saturday morning I went to the post office, and saw a steel fabricator that happened to be open.

I wanted the heavily flecked zinc coating, but the guy said they didn't have that kind - just the small fleck like the piece you see above.

The photo above shows how it looked when I brought it home from the steel fabricators. It was scuffed and scratched and needed something to give it a more pleasing finish.

Below, you can see how a piece of coarse sandpaper and elbow grease makes the finish nicer.

It took about 15 minutes to sand the three 9" discs front and back to smooth out the sharp edges on the back side.

The photo below shows the steel after sanding.

I really like the contrast with the French chair...

The steel discs cost a bit more than I had hoped, since they had a $25 minimum. Still, a $30 side table that only required 15 minutes of elbow grease is OK in my book.

This is a little sneak preview of a new look I plan to have in my fall living room - a mix of heavy industrial and fancy French pieces.

Word for the Day:
Jeremiah 24:1
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken into exile from Jerusalem Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, together with the officials of Judah, the craftsmen, and the metal workers, and had brought them to Babylon, the Lord showed me this vision: behold, two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the Lord.

  1. Being married to a sheet metal man myself... I have an appreciation for this metal piece.
He on the other hand... couldn't careless about having sheet metal anything around here. I guess from working with it for so many years, he has never liked our Stainless steel fridge. He'd rather have wood...natural not painted. ;)
I personally like the marriage of your table an chair. I like it alot!
