Purging Extraneous Clutter...

Simplicity is key. Less is more. Get back to basics.

For the past two years, my life has been about purging and being intentional about what I keep. I am intent on living with what I love, and getting rid of extra "stuff."

My goal: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." - William Morris

I am NOT a minimalist. But...I want less. Less stuff, more experiences, more meaningful relationships, the REAL, GOOD stuff.

Still...I want my home to reflect my personality, my taste, and have enough "stuff" in it to be cozy and remind me of people I love and places I have been.

These candle sticks represent a visual illustration of what I am working towards in my life; getting rid of extraneous stuff so I can enjoy the solid, enduring blessings of life.

Most likely, this pair of thrift store silver plated candlesticks was used at a wedding reception. I get it.

The white bows weren't working for me, but I loved the design and patina.

So, after I took the "before" photos, I ripped off the ribbons.

Ahhhhh. Much better. If candlesticks could talk, they'd sigh with relief like I do when taking off my church shoes or my underwire bra.

Sorry for the visual there, but I know you can relate. :)

  1. HA - I can relate - in fact I'd sure like to get home to take that underwire OFF and put on a cute swimsuit instead :) Have a super weekend!

  2. Love the metaphor of taking off the ribbon. Your post came right across my reading list like it is supposed to. When you get through minimizing your space, come do mine.

  3. What a wonderful collection - I do collect Buffalo China pieces because my father used it in his soda fountain when I was young. I enjoyed reading the history behind the tableware. How much do you supposed was taken as "souvenirs"?

  4. Nice post Revi. Just exactly how I am feeling right now. I am at a time in my life that I am seeing too much stuff ... too many unfinished projects and not enough time. Thanks for the inspiration to try harder to do something about it.

  5. Whew, glad it was just the ribbons you were getting rid and not the candlesticks. I was beginning to feel a wave of guilt rush over me for not doing a better, faster job of trying to purge. Does it count that I bought my first shelving unit to organize what I will be keeping? The motivation comes and goes in spurts.....

  6. Hi Review!
I am doing the same thing in my life too. I want less things and more time with people I love. Some things are hard to get rid of because of the memories, but most are just "stuff" to quote George Carlin.
I'm glad you took the bows off those candle holders. I was worried for a minute that you'd leave them on there. Lol

  7. Revi, that was a great post. I liked the quote by William Morris and love the verse from Luke.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. Great post and funny analogy. You have just the right amount of stuff and the way you arrange it reflects great taste

  9. I can totally relate. I had a vignette in the fireplace for summer and yesterday I removed it and put back the fireplace screen. I decided that I wanted to look at "less".

    The candlesticks are great!

  10. LOL! Those are beautiful. I do have a few things in my house I need to change up. They just don't feel right!! It's sometimes finding the right thing that takes time!!

  12. I ended up with a similar pair in an auction box...the "brass look" is pretty dated, so I cleaned them, sprayed them with metal primer and then sprayed them with a satin black spray paint. AWESOMENESS! I did a similar treatment with a trio of tall brass candle holders I had in my booth for months...I painted them one of my favorite "bluish" colors. After I painted them they sold within a week.
