Once upon a time, a little house was built. It was 1945. It began as a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, kitchen, living room and dining room, with a 1 car garage.
Soon, as often happens, the little house grew bigger. A 3rd bedroom with a 3/4 bath was added, as well as a den, a utility room, and another garage - in FRONT of the old one.
To add these rooms, changes had to happen, and windows were sacrificed. (There were two such windows to nowhere in the living room, as seen in the photo below.)
The kitchen door that once opened to the driveway now opens into a newer garage.
Two kitchen windows that once looked north were covered over with drywall. A view of the garage was not a pleasing sight.
The windowless space above the sink sat dormant for years. New cabinetry was built at some point, but nothing creative happened where the window used to be.
One day, Rustoleum invented chalk board paint!
Blogs were discovered! Ideas were hatched.
In March, the blank space above the sink was painted as a chalk board. It was much better, but still, it needed something.
Along came some thrift store shelving and faux chalk paint to the rescue!
This pretty wooden shelf was purchased last fall for under three bucks. It fit the spot perfectly, but the gray-green paint was not working.
An hour spent watching a rerun of "Lie to Me" while painting a couple of coats of white home-made chalk paint, smearing on some wax, and soon, all that was needed was a couple of nails to hang it.
Now, where there once was a black hole that sucked the life out of a chartreuse kitchen, there was finally a little charm!
A few vintage accessories...and a problem area was turned into a charming focal point.
But this story is far from over! No, this is not the end.
Come back tomorrow for another chapter of, "As the Kitchen Turns..." No, wait..."All My Kitchens." Hmmm..."The Kitchens of Our Lives."
I'd better sign off - the corn is getting deep!
Word for the Day:
Malachi 3:10Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
