Thrifty Finds - Week of July 9-14, 2012

Lately, I've been picking up little
vases with a modern style if I find them
for the right price. I think details
like these can add a little freshness
and a bit of modern style to a more
traditional or eclectic environment.
These were a steal at $1 each.

This silver plate item is pretty unique.

I think it is intended to be a centerpiece with
a small floral arrangement in the center
of the three candlesticks. I may sell this...
I'm working on a way to do this via my blog
and I need to step up my Etsy activity.

I love the detail in these wood candlesticks!

They are both primitive and modern... should I keep them?
I haven't decided yet. Ditto for these stone coasters.

It's so cool that they have the natural shape!
These are definite keepers. Valves. I now have a "picker!"
A guy who owns a thrift store and also picks up
metal to salvage is looking for things for me.
He was just going to give them to me, but
I insisted to pay. He said, "They wouldn't even bring
a nickle at the scrap yard. How about a quarter."
FOR ALL THREE!!!

My mind is spinning with ideas to use them.
Keeping these, too:

They're actually pillow shams for king size pillows.
They look like silk, but probably arent. They also look
gray in the photo, but they're actually more taupe.
I plan on using them to make pillows for the living room...
They were $2 each.

This is a pretty fab platter from Mexico.
I love this kind of pottery, and have a box of it in my garage.

It doesn't go with my current decor, but
I haven't been able to part with it. I may sell a few
pieces on Etsy or my blog, but I'll keep some.
I love primitive and folk art pieces.
Maybe someday I'll use them again!
And they're getting more and more scarce.

This one I'm on the fence about.
I LOVE the bands of stamped metal,
but the elephant - not so much.

See how it's nailed into the wood?

I think I might be able to remove it, and possibly
replace it with a nice piece of rusty tin or something.
Have I mentioned how much I LOVE boxes?
Well I do. And I find it hard to let go of them.
So, I think I'm keeping it. How's that for
talking myself into something right before
your very eyes? Thanks for helping me decide.

This one is going to be redone and sold.
I already have one I like better in my space.

It will be painted - probably a shade of turquoise.
Maybe distressed, or maybe not. I'll decide later.

I found a couple more things - furniture.
I'll be back to share those in another post!

  2. Nice finds. I like a little touch of modern here and there. Just like you, I'm not crazy about the elephant. I'd replace it with something else.

  5. The Mexican pottery and genuine talavera is very hard to find these days because of what is going on in Mexico. I collect it.

  6. Once again you scored. I am thrilled you got those handles or steering wheels or whatever they are! Lucky! So jealous. Thanks for coming by to comment on my practical beauties. If I ever do with those lights what I intend, you will like it, I think. Anywho, enjoy your new stuff. You are like me with the boxes. I just can't part with them!

  10. Keep the box, replace the tin!

Ok so the bowl thingy at the bottom that is on a lil stool/candlestick type deal (boy do I have a way with words today! Do you have days like that!?) So, I found one at my local GW the other day but without the bottom piece that yours has. So this has given me a great idea! Yeah...I'm gonna give it a lift with a candlestick. The COOLEST thing about my piece though is it has a little knob-type piece in the center of the bowl. And the knob has little holes that have been nicely drilled out. Sounds weird huh....I have NO idea what it was intended for but I use it to hold all of my paint brushes! THe holes are kind of slanted and in different sizes. Hold about 8 brushes just in the knob! I just laid all my other brushes in the bowl....and now it has collected couple stray bottles of paint and super glue. It has been a great addition to my craft table! Wish I could send you a picture! I really need to blog about it! I'll let ya know when I do.
Sorry bout the long comment...had to share!
