Switching Gears...a fun new painting

This week, I completed a 14 x 14 canvas of a very cute dog - Boone. He's a Jack Russell Terrier. I enjoyed every minute of the painting!

The canvas was adapted from a very cute smiling photo of Boone...he was wearing his glasses in it.

His master preferred the portrait sans glasses, but I think he looks so cute and intelligent, maybe a second portrait is needed...Such the little business man, is he not? I would even consider dressing him in a little suit and tie in the portrait...just for fun. :)

Word for the Day:
Proverbs 12:10
Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.

Thrifty Life Thursday #5

A sad end...

This cute bird was a recent find at a thrift store.
As with many thrift store finds, it was a tad grungy...so I
opted to send it through the dishwasher.

Much to my surprise, when I opened the dishwasher and began to unload it - the dishes were covered in grit.
And the cute little bird was barely recognizable...

I'm not sure what material it was made of,
but one thing for sure...it was NOT DISHWASHER SAFE.
Bye Bye, Birdie. So glad you were Cheep Cheep Cheep.

Now, for features from Thrifty Life Thursday #4:

Jeanette at Creating a Life shared a clever mantel construction project from a salvaged door.

Meg from My Vintage Life shared some drool-worthy finds including vintage linens and a tiara and veil...we all need a tiara, right?

Jann's collection of vintage plaid thermos and picnic pieces are wonderful, but she really got me when she had a snow picnic with them! I would have loved to transport myself through the computer screen to sip cocoa with her at
Have a Daily Cup of Mrs. Olson.

Kathy at Sharing Shadymont had been searching for a clock. She found a wonderful classic at a consignment shop, which she promptly painted and it looks great! Of course, she had to completely restyle her shelves. (We totally get that, Kathy!)

Seven Things To Do With Vintage Pearl Buttons

      Vintage Pearl Buttons...mmmmmm.

Aside from my three children, one of the blessings I brought away from my marriage was an impressive array of vintage sewing items from my ex grandmother-in-law.

She was gone years before we married, but since I was the only one even remotely interested in the items, I was offered cigar boxes full of zippers, snaps, trim and notions. Of all the items, my favorites were the buttons.

There were buttons of all types; vintage plastics, jet, carved wood, horn, leather and metal - even a small silver button among the stash. Still, my favorites were the pearl buttons.

I sewed about a million on a man's suit vest circa 1990, and wore it quite a bit. It was REALLY heavy. Heavy vests are not really my thing anymore.

Until recently, the other buttons have remained in their Little Corona cigar boxes. Blogging and Pinterest have inspired me to bring them out into the open, and flaunt my wealth of buttons!

Some of my favorites now fill a space in a small wall-display box found at a thrift store and painted white.

It is in my middle bedroom, with the still-green chest. (I did at least BUY paint for it...does that count?)

Here are six more very creative ways to use and display vintage buttons, via Pinterest:

Jewelry...this piece from Quench metalworks was featured on I Love Handmade Blog, which is on hiatus now.

I LOVE this lamp shade from She Dreams Big...and it looks like it would take about as much time as my heavy vest.

Here's a simple one from Timewashed on Etsy. Display carded pearl buttons under a cloche.

Another simple, but charming approach from Laughing with Angels caught my eye.

She displays her buttons in a vintage jar and on a flower frog in her studio, so she can be inspired to create! I'm going to do this, too. No more cigar boxes for pretty things.

How about Clever Karen's wonderful ivory crazy quilt?

Another Etsy Item (sorry, already sold, of course) from RememberMeEmily combines a vintage salt shaker, buttons and book pages into an adorable mini flower arrangement.

Update:  Emily has NEW vintage button items HERE.

Emily even has a doll head like mine! Love it.
