Remembering How to Play

Games People Played - Part 2

I did not set out to collect games or game pieces...

Like so many other of my "collections," it just happened.

Some of them I have bought with the intention to use in art.

Then I find myself not wanting to use them.

You can't HAVE your game pieces and SELL them, too.

Other games I bought for a good price because they were cool.

SO I stick them away in a closet until I figure out 

just what in the world I will do with them.


I'd like to use them decoratively, maybe. 
Or I COULD play them. Maybe.
Though most are just odd pieces - 
the others were lost long ago.

I love the graphic quality of game pieces, 
and the fact that they may have letters or numbers on them.

And these really look GOOD in some art, wouldn't they?

They're like scrabble tiles, only black wood. I have no idea

what game they were. Does anyone recognize them?

But I KNOW you know what these are. 

These are wooden. Probably made for children.

Somewhere in my hoarder garage, I have some

ivory ones made of some old plastic stuff. 

They're much more refined than these...

...but probably not as old as these thicker wooden ones 

of which I only have a few.

Maybe I should include them in some assemblages?

There are not enough to play anymore. 

They would just sit in my garage and take up space.

That way, they can bee enjoyed in a new way. And

maybe I can make one for myself, just to remember them.

Sneak Peek at Modern Primitive Elements

This post is written in honor of a little primitive table

that is embarking on a new life as a bedside table in

 my in-the-works "Modern Primitive" bedroom.

It was left in the storage shed of a home we moved into a few houses ago.

It's very crudely constructed.

 We used it as a work table for painting supplies.

We were painting most of the house.

Then it went back out to the storage shed and stayed there.

When we moved, we took it with us. And we used it again

as a painter's helper table in the next house.

Back then, it was natural wood with no finish and a nice array of paint drips.

At some point, I don't remember why, but I painted the base white.

Maybe I had a soft spot for it, since it had been so helpful.

But for whatever reason, it made the cut, and moved with me to 

this house. It's been out in the storage shed here, too. Poor baby. 

One night while trying to fall asleep, 

I got the idea to organize my stuff differently. 

I began rearranging furniture in my mind.

Do you do that, too? Then I couldn't fall asleep.

I began dividing up all my "white things" into categories.

There were cottage-type feminine things.

There were industrial things.

There were funky vintage things.

There were modern things.

There were garden things.

There were elegant things.

And there were primitive things,

like this unusual Mexican pottery piece.

I've never seen another piece this color before.

And I have a box full of blues, rusts, yellows, etc.

That little part of me that likes unexpected combinations

of unrelated items and offbeat color palettes got excited.

I wanted that beat up Mexican plate in the same room

as that slick and shiny modern glass vase!

It is a good way to exercise the principles of Gestalt.

My common denominator will be color - whites, grays, creams.

Now he has gotten a good cleaning, sanding and 

a new coat of dark stain on his natural wood top. 

And now, this unassuming 

little workhorse of a table

will enjoy a life inside the house, 

next to hand carved pieces,

slick and shiny modern pieces and 

anything else I think looks right.

Note: this is just a sampling to illustrate the style

I am going for. It is not where things will go permanently.

But I still have other projects to complete before

I show you a finished reveal.

This was just a momentary diversion 
while I wait for help to finish removing

windows from my living room!
